Murder Mystery Weekend in Big Bear, CA Oct. 26 - 27 It's where Fear Factor meets Murder She Wrote. $300.00 per couple. Includes accomodations at Spencer Escape all meals and activities. You and your partner will come as participants in this competition. The winning team walks with $100,000.00 (imaginary money). They will also be on the cover of Shape-U-Up Magazine. In reality, it's all part of a murder mystery game. Some of the guests are professional actors! You and your partner will be paired up with others to form a team. Each team must have a member complete one segment of the obstacle course. What is real, and what isn't? What are clues and what are simply diversions? That is for each to decide. The competition and the mystery game coincide, whereas, when a team wins a segment of the competition, they also may win clues. Go to www.SpencerEscape.com to register and find more details.

On a worldwide level and in particular on a Latin-American level many organizations are committed to using events as mediums, nonetheless and due to today's globalization we should come together more often for the development and strengthening of the region in the environment of the Events and Conventions. It is for this reason that we should get to the heart of the matter and create a norm that unites not only the activities themselves of the events, but the construction of future areas for those events. Join us for 3 days of excellent professional development sessions, great networking and a journey of a lifetime. Combine a great educational opportunity with an exciting program of tours. Experience the legendary Egyptian brand of hospitality.

This year's IH&RA Annual Congress is about shaking up the industry's management practices. That's why we've invited industry 'new blood' to share their experiences and expectations with you. Students from some of the world's top hospitality management schools will, for the first time in IH&RA Congress history, actually be involved in panel discussions and sessions.

Another first will be a 'Students Forum' held the day prior to the Annual Congress. Working on these complex issues starts already with the IH&RA Think-Tank on New Management, June 2001, the findings of which will feed into the Congress programme.

But that's not all. This year's 'forum style' programme actively encourages delegate interaction and networking in more ways than one. Firstly, roundtable discussions will follow the day's plenary sessions, enabling you to voice your opinions and ideas with the group as a whole. Discussion outcomes will be recorded and distributed amongst delegates during the congress. Secondly, we want to make your participation a total experience! After all your hard work in the sessions, you'll have ample opportunity to network and make new business contacts, whilst also experiencing local business and culture, through exciting educational excursions.

REGISTRATION FORM AND FEES We highly recommend that you use our online registration form at http://www.ih-ra.com/events/39th-congress/ But if you prefer, hit "reply" and type "Registration Form". 09.00 - 12.45 Educational Programme * The Mystery Tour Keynote with a difference. Prepare for the new times! A specially developed opening by young hospitality professionals on how they view the hospitality industry - what they love, what should be changed. Be warned: they'll launch the congress with questions they'd like to see delegates addressing! Are you shaping up with new strategies to attract and retain these new talents? * Shape up or Shake Out: Changing Lifestyles, Changing People, Changing Organisations Employees of the future will expect to be compensated on their ability to translate the broad vision of the firm into everyday transactions. Managers of the future must balance the traditional, internally focused view with one that incorporates an external, future oriented view. Leaders of the future will have to employ a learning organisation model to solve the routine and exceptional problems of the business. Join panellists, hospitality students and industry peers to learn about these and other trends underpinning successful business strategy and competitiveness in the round-table discussions. Who are the new employees, managers and leaders? What expectations do they have? And, with whom are you competing for the best human capital available? 13.00 - 14.30 Lunch 14.30 - 18.30 Experience Egypt - Visit to the Pyramids 20.00 Dinner on Nile Bank and Nile Cruise

29 OCTOBER 2001

09.00 - 13.00 Experience Egypt - Cairo Museum and Old City 13.00 - 14.30 Lunch 14.30 - 17.30 Educational Programme * Changing Customers, Changing Strategies You have the data management system in place. You're tracking your customers' profiles and preferences, and training your employees to meet, and even exceed, their expectations. But, do you really know what the consumers of tomorrow will be like, in terms of preference and lifestyle? What will they expect, and what do they dislike about the current product offering? Are you and your employees ready to respond? Gain valuable insight into how patterns of consumer demand are changing, and the consequences for human capital issues. * Environmentality - have you got it? Your environment programme and management systems are set up and now you want to see how you're doing relative to your industry peers. Discover how a new benchmark tool developed by the International Hotels Environment Initiative (IHEI) can help you compare and improve your environmental performance. Learn how to benchmark your environmental performance with the goal of maximising operational efficiencies in the following areas: energy use, water consumption, waste water, waste management, purchasing and chemical use and contribution to local community/environmental improvements.

20.00 Dinner at the Pyramids - Oasis of the Mena House Oberoi

30 OCTOBER 2001

09.30 - 12.30 Educational Programme * Expectations & Reality A revolution in thought and approach to the creation of wealth through human, customer and organizational capital will perhaps represent one of the most difficult challenges to an industry steeped in the romance of traditional hospitality service. Managers will need to develop an ability to balance the art of hospitality with the demands for investment returns. An emphasis on adding value will be increasingly driven by investors, and transmitting a value adding emphasis to all employees will become one of the most important of the competencies of tomorrow's manager. At the same time, a company's future value is being increasingly driven by 'intangibles' and the concept of intellectual property. Learn about these issues from industry experts and investors, and understand how you can link human capital and profitability. * Leading a multi-cultural team Do you understand team dynamics and how you can make them work for you and not against you? Perceptions of a team are different for everybody, so determining the rules to make a multi-cultural team work is not always easy. This workshop will help you understand how to develop the most effective leadership approach in maximising the creative potential of your team. * Euro Countdown Are you ready for the Euro? This session will focus on final preparations for the Euro. Learn from peers and make the most of this opportunity to ensure that your organisation is on track! * Updates: Learn about important developments in your industry: - European Foundation for the Accreditation of Hotel-school Programmes (EFAH) - Youth Career Initiative 13.00 - 14.30 Lunch 15.00 - 17.00 IH&RA General Assembly (restricted meeting) Afternoon free for delegates not members of the General Assembly 19.30 - 23.00 Gala Dinner

Have you been struggling over whether or not you need a website? Do you want one, but you have a lot of questions? Would you like to talk with a web designer and explore some of the issues? Then this class is for you!

This is a teleclass, which means that you simply pick up your telephone and dial into the class using a special number. Your only cost is your long distance charge. There is no registration fee!

We'll cover the seven key issues in planning a website: how to know what to put on your website (do you have enough material to justify a website); determining the look and feel that is appropriate for your business; important considerations in web design; where to get content for your website; how to select a webmaster; considerations when choosing a web host; and what it costs to establish and maintain a website.

This is an exciting, convenient way to learn! This class is offered regularly. Click below to see the current scheudle: http://www.dawsonresources.com/teleclasses.html

You may also send an e-mail to dianne@dawsonresources.com for more information.

Developing a Coaching and Mentoring System Boston 3/20-21/00

From the front line to senior management, organizations are embracing innovative coaching and mentoring practices to meet the increasing developmental challenges of today's knowledge worker. By creating a coaching and mentoring culture, the best organizations are going far beyond the rhetoric of “people as the most important asset” and are taking practical steps to nurture talent and improve learning, performance, and retention. The results are impressive: in a recent study, 77% of respondents from U.S. companies implementing formal mentoring and coaching programs cited “improved retention and improved overall performance.” This workshop helps participants identify the best options for building a supportive environment where the latest coaching techniques, mentoring programs, and creative development efforts can yield the fullest results for individuals and their organizations.

Emotional Intelligence: Optimizing Human Performance in the Workplace 10/8-11/00 Chicago

The success or failure of your business depends on people. With growing pressure to expand revenues and markets while improving costs and efficiencies, organizational viability, flexible teams and effective leadership are critical requirements for survival. As work becomes more complex and collaborative, emotional competence will distinguish those who flourish from those who falter. To provide the most comprehensive forum on emotional intelligence (EI) and its impact in the workplace, Linkage, Inc. presents Emotional Intelligence: Optimizing Human Performance in the Workplace. By understanding and effectively applying EI (a collection of emotional and interpersonal competencies that guide behavior and thinking), organizations can identify and develop better internal leaders, maximise productivity, create more effective teams and improve the selection process. Unlike IQ, EI skills represent a competitive advantage that can be learned. Keynote speakers and workshop presenters will provide a data-driven business case for assessing and developing EI, and participants will take part in facilitated discussions to chart new territory in the application of emotional intelligence in organizations.
