This interactive workshop examines the critical role that meeting managers and event planners need to be prepared to play to reduce risks and/or respond to crisis situations associated with events under their control. The session emphasizes the need to utilize strategic planning and risk assessment for the purpose of being better prepared to respond to any meeting- or event-related crisis. The presentation will review several selected case studies to be utilized as examples of actual crisis situations relating to past events. In addition, information will be presented that will enable meeting/event planners to establish their own checklists and best practices plans to assist them in preventing, or at least responding more effectively, to meeting or event crisis situations. The emphasis of this session is on planning to minimize risks, prevention and protection. The information presented is sure to be very useful for every hospitality professional in attendance--whether meeting planner, speaker or supplier.

Both planners and suppliers have been facing serious and critical challenges- and we're told this situation is not a short term one. With ever decreasing budgets and still-increasing travel and safety concerns, what is the future of the meetings industry? This session will identify the "Top Ten" trends impacting all of us. In addition to learning what these are, you will also have the chance to do some "blue sky" thinking and to further identify what you see in your own respective area of interest

Catherine Palin-Brinkworth is an international speaker and facilitator on Leadership, Growth and Change. In her corporate life, Catherine cut her teeth in one of the most challenging environments in the business world, building and managing teams of outstanding performers in the competitive financial services industry. Her history has been one of building businesses from the ground up, in senior national sales and marketing management roles.

Her post-graduate qualifications are in social ecology and ethical leadership. The story of her own life's challenges is powerful and motivational - her empowerment of others has been recognised by the highest awards from her peers - and she is continually asked back by her clients.

On the platform her audiences describe her as 'terrific... major impact... enthusiasm and wit... professional and intelligent... an absolute joy.'

Christine Bartzer - A manager and event specialist, Ms. Bartzer is an experienced meeting planner and administrative manager with 7 years background in the meetings and hospitality industry. She holds a BS Degree in Psychology from Florida State University. In addition to her academic credentials, Ms. Bartzer has completed numerous training programs dealing with administrative practices, company management, association management and computer applications.Ms. Bartzer has served as a committee chair and a chapter officer for the Society of Government Meeting Professionals (SGMP), Florida Capital Chapter. She has also completed the Certified Meeting Professional review course and is actively pursuing her Certified Meeting Professional (CMP) designation.

Rochelle Balch is the president of a small business that specializes in computer consulting. She’s been through “disasters” in her own office, in addition to providing resources for those who need help to recover. Rochelle will provide information from over 30 years of experience in the computer industry. RB Balch has received city, state and national recognition for success and community involvement

Jim Fausel, CMP, CMM is President of the Conference Connection, an independent meetings management firm based in Scottsdale Arizona. His 28 year experience in the hospitality industry has given him insights in development of quality education programs for meeting managers. He is a member of MPI, PCMA, SGMP, RCMA, IAHMP and last year received the coveted Sam Gilmer Award from SGMP as Meeting Professional of the Year. He teaches a Meetings Management course at Arizona State University and has written many articles for industry trade magazines and a Board Training Program entitled “Now that I’m Aboard, What do I do?

DR. H. STANLEY JONES, CPA, CSP, CAE  is Executive Director of the Fraud Research Institute. He is also a Professor at the University of Phoenix, Hawaii Campus where he has instructed the faculty on the differences in Teaching and Learning Styles based on the MBTI®. A published author, Stan’s latest book is Quality of Life - Achieving Balance In An Unbalanced World. He has also written books on Financial Planning and Marketing.

His professional affiliations include membership in the American Society for Industrial Security and the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners. When
not traveling overseas or to the mainland, he resides with his wife, Roberta in Makakilo, Hawaii.

MERLE MANZI, CMP -A former criminal investigator for the State of Florida, Merle Manzi served most of his government service career in an investigative law enforcement capacity until 1989 when he transitioned to the training and program management field. Merle is currently serving in an interim appointment capacity as an intelligence program coordinator with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center in Glynco, Georgia. He holds an AS in Police Science from Polk Community College, a BS in Criminology from Florida State University and a MS in Criminal Justice from Rollins College. His meeting management background includes planning, coordinating and delivering training programs and conferences throughout the U.S. and in Africa, Asia and Europe. Merle earned his CMP designation in 1993. Merle is Executive Vice President of Peak Management Consultancy. In this capacity, he is the company CEO and an independent meeting planner/manager and speaker. He develops and presents training programs for law enforcement organizations, coordinates conferences and seminars for associations, governmental entities and universities and makes speaking presentations relating to emerging crime trends and contemporary criminal justice/societal issues.

LINDA Pereira is President of the CIMPA Portugal Chapter. She is the senior partner of CPL Events and is a graduate in modern languages. Linda is a qualified educator, professional congress organizer and international speaker. Her PR, marketing and event experience was gained during her time as a professional Interpreter and advisor whilst travelling all over the world accompanying Members of Government and has been present in the most important events which have marked our recent history. Her expertise in protocol and business etiquette as well as cross-cultural communication have given her a privileged status as a consultant in government circles and at the highest corporate levels. Her work in the Meeting Industry led her to take a Master’s Degree in Adult Education. She is proud to have been involved in countless large-scale meetings at an international level and to have played an important role in the two European Presidencies held by Portugal as well as EXPO’98, the last World Exposition of the XXth century. Respected internationally as a speaker she is continually being invited to speak to professionals in the Business Travel Sector and has lectured in countries such as Italy, Spain, Russia, Egypt and The Netherlands to name just a few.
 
Heidi Richards, cppm is an Elantrepreneur™, International Speaker, Author, and expert in Employee Retention, Marketing, Customer Service, Sales, Networking, Leadership, and Having FUN at Work! She has been a business woman in South Florida for 21+ years. The Florida Retail Federation just named her an Outstanding Retailer for 2003. Heidi writes for many major news media and speaks at International Conferences around the world. Heidi is past President of the Florida Speakers Association and An ABWA National "Top 10 Business Woman."

Tricia Santos is a trainer and consultant who takes the technical out of technology. For fourteen years, she has helped small business owners and professionals use technology to grow their business and get more done in less
 time and with less effort. Her education includes a BA from West Virginia University, and two Master's Degrees: a Master of Divinity from Duke University Divinity School, and a Master of Regional Planning from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Tricia also served as an officer in the United States Air Force.

Edward E. Scannell, CMP. CSP
Actively involved with the meetings industry, Ed has been studying future trends for over twenty years. He is a frequent speaker at industry events, both domestically and in international conferences. Formerly the Director of the University Conference Bureau at Arizona State University, he has also taught at the ASU College of Business and at the University of Northern Iowa. He has written or co-authored fifteen books in the fields of Human Resource Management. Among other industry groups, Ed has been a member of the World Future Society for several years.

EJ Siwek, CMP is President and Founder of FLASHpoint Technologies, a company providing research, training, consulting and articles on technology solutions to the meeting industry. He serves as Chair of the Technology Advisory Council for the Convention Industry Council’s APEX initiative – an industry wide effort to drive best practices on the use and application of technology. 

With a diverse background in association, event and corporate planning, EJ has a personal perspective on the unique problems that meeting professional face in applying technology to their processes. Active in industry for 25 years as a planner, publisher, and consultant, in July 2001, EJ was selected by Meeting News as one of the Top 25 Influential Leaders in the industry for his efforts in educating and informing meeting professionals on meeting technology. 

In 2000, Mr. Siwek served as Conference Director for the International Laboratory Accreditation Council’s conference (ILAC 2000), a biennial international conference with delegates from 62 world economies and hosted by the National Institute of Standards and Technology. He has held positions with Juran Institute as the Director of the Meetings Department and as Director of Marketing for Excel Partnership overseeing department wide activities for 500 meeting per year.

LUISA TEIXEIRA - President, Portuguese Association of Professional Congress Organizers

SUSAN KEMP VISSARI, CMP  -A Senior Consultant with Booz, Allen & Hamilton, Susan Kemp Vissari has over 12 years of professional experience in the meetings and training industries. Her experience was gained by performing services for commercial clients and federal government agencies.

Susan holds an AS in Marketing from Montgomery College and a BS in Business Management from the University of Maryland. In addition, she is pursuing a Certification in Trade Show Marketing. Susan’s meeting management background has been gained through planning, coordinating and delivering training sessions, seminars and conferences throughout the U.S. for numerous government organizations, including the Department of Energy, Department of Defense, EPA, and the Food and Drug Administration. Susan earned her Certified Meeting Professional (CMP) designation in 1998.

Currently, Susan serves as the Training Program Manager for the Process Improvement initiative within Booz Allen. She is responsible for managing the development and implementation of the Organizational Training Program. This involves managing all training efforts, including curriculum development, training delivery, and evaluation.
