When you have a conference room full of people who are exactly alike in thinking and outlook and who grew up together doing exactly the same things - what do you learn? Nothing. They just try to outbrag each other or escape from the meeting to ease the boredom.

When you attend the same meetings with the same people year after year, what new perspectives do you get? None.

SO - if there are bosses reading this newsletter, PLEASE - send us a few diverse members of your staff. We promise to send them back connected to a network that will benefit your organization for a long, long time to come. We also promise to send them back energized with fresh, innovative ideas they can immediately use.

PROFESSIONALS FROM DIFFERENT CULTURES - Nothing energizes a room more quickly than a multi-cultural one. "People of the rainbow" - as a colleague puts it - white, black, brown, tan, yellow, olive and others. It is always fascinating and instructive to see how people of different cultural backgrounds view things, places and people. It's even more interesting to see how we react to those views. A multi-cultural setting is always instructive. As we get exposed to different perspectives, we become more understanding, we learn to connect more effectively and take our business relationships to the next level.

OLD AND YOUNG PROFESSIONALS
Have you noticed that leaders in the association, meetings and travel industry are, like me, past the half century mark? Nothing wrong with that. We need the wisdom that comes with experience. (Of course this presumes that older folks have acquired wisdom and not just repeated the same experience 100 times without learning anything new). Also - there are old people who think like young people. Youth is not really defined by the number of years you have lived on this planet or the number of wrinkles on your face. Youth is an outlook, an attitude, a perspective.

There are significant differences in the way the "young young", the " young old" and the "old old" think - impacting the way we learn and take advantage of opportunities. The "young young" and the "young old" with whom I have had the pleasure of working would rather send an email than a formal memo. They get the information I need in minutes, using the internet, newsgroups and email; they solicit quotes and compare prices quickly without spending a dime on transportation or long distance calls, they are comfortable getting the word out using blogs, vlogs or podcasts. They are comfortable with technology. But more importantly, even those who are not so tech-savvy are immersed in the culture of a generation that welcomes change. They are at ease living in the 21st century.

PROFESSIONALS FROM DIFFERENT INDUSTRIES - "In-breeding causes mental and physical defects", my mentor used to tell me. She encouraged me to look into other industries for insights to my problems. She took me to meetings that were totally unrelated to my profession. I was always amazed at how folks of different professional backgrounds approached the same problem and came out with creative solutions. That served me well.

Professionals of different religions, gender and others - we want them all
