Risk Assessment of Conference
Venues - Jaap Ketel
Conference organisers usually concentrate on issues like geographical location,
availability, accessibility, physical size, services, general image and cost
when searching for a suitable venue for an event. Equally important should be
the issue of safety and consequential liability towards the organiser or his
principal. In today's world the liability of the organiser needs special
attention, since shrewd lawyers find every way and mean to call the unlucky PCO
to the bar if a delegate at a conference is injured or worse killed during the
conference. No responsible organiser shall be working without a proper liability
insurance taken out. However, if can be proven that the PCO has not informed
himself properly that all permits and certifications of the Conference Venue are
in place and if not a proper pre-venue inspection has been conducted, it will be
difficult to defend that the PCO has done all he could to avoid his liability in
the case of claimed damages. This session addresses the do's and don'ts in the
pre-contractual phase when booking a venue.
