The CIMPA HONORS will be awarded to
Visionaries in Technology,
Meetings and Incentives
This is CIMPA’s vision: Meeting and travel planners will help change the world.
1. First and most
important, we want to move travel and meeting planning from art to science. We
believe that with the widespread availability of digital computers for numerical
simulations and the demonstration of chaos in various physical systems, there is
no reason why we cannot reduce any process to numbers. We believe we can
identify the mathematical and theoretical underpinnings in the chaos of meetings
and travel.
We do not believe in “standardization” because as anyone
swinging a pendulum will see, very small changes in the spin or even just its
orientation cause significant, very visible changes in the output. Scientists
point out the amazing "butterfly effect in nature - a butterfly flapping its
wings in China can cause a hurricane in Florida a year later. If you stepped
back in time and cut just one tree, the world you return to will be a much
different one from the one you left. Small changes can cause huge differences in
results, rendering standardization at best a frustrating goal.
2. Secondly, we want
meetings and travel to actively contribute to world peace, understanding and
tolerance, one friendship at a time We see travelers and meeting attendees as
powerful social bees that can cross-pollinate ideas and connect peoples around
the world. Our mission is to launch as many social bees as possible.
3. Third,
we believe
that tech-savvy planners are the only kind who can efficiently and effectively
plan travel and meetings at this day and age. We rank technology right up there
with oxygen.
4. Fourth,
we
deplore the fragmentation in this industry. We believe that tour operators,
travel agents, hotel and airline sales managers and coordinators, rental car and
bus operators, technology providers, speakers, even spouses and many others have
as important a role in the planning of meetings and travel as meeting planners,
incentive organizers and association executives. When these people can learn to
work together seamlessly, there will be less stress and more successful, more
productive meetings, events and travel.
5. Fifth, we firmly
believe we live in a global village. Anything we do affects other people in the
planet. It matters not if we are in a big international meeting with an
international agenda or a small meeting in a little town with only a few people
of the same heritage in the room talking about the local school garden. The
outlook should still be global – knowing that whatever one does affects somebody
else on the other side of the world.
6. Lastly, we want to move
the focus of meeting and travel planning from mere logistics to results. While
we acknowledge that expertise in methodology and use of tools are important for
planning successful travel and meetings, our focus is on RESULTS. This means
giving priority to the achievement of objectives instead of what time meeting
starts and ends, serving doughnuts or bagels for breakfast (some people do
prefer fish soup for breakfast) ,buffet or sit down dinner, rounds, squares or
horseshoe, whether to call the presiding person Chairman, Chairperson or Chair
and other such details. We do not support blind adherence to “form”. The
question must always be asked: Does this help achieve the objectives of the
meeting? Sometimes the answer is No. Sometimes the inflexibility of timed
schedules could prevent one from taking full advantage of a life-changing
discussion.
